We all know how callous the MNCs have always been, given their ability to wrangle away from any situation by greasing a few palms of the Government. Right from Union Carbide to Enron, the MNCs have cared two hoots about Indians or their safety. Now here are the other giants who have bitten the dust. The Centre for Science and Environment has found out that Coca-Cola's and Pepsi's soft drinks contain pesticide residues far in excess of the European Union Norms.

The citizens were rightly concerned in the 70s which led to a demand for the MNCs to turn partly desis This made Coca-Cola withdraw from the Indian Market. ( it did not make an appearance till the 1990s when these restrictions were lifted). It is necessary that the MNCs realise that in any country, the safety and security of its citizens comes first. The behaviour of Pepsi and Coke smacks of imperialism, which was last seen in the East India Company (the company that 'conquered' India). Its about time the MNCs realise that when in Rome they have to be Romans.

Unfortunately, the Romans themselves have contiminated the water. :-( So there is no point blaming the MNC's alone. The law should be applied equally to *all*

Well, Of course we are the catalysts for this kind of indifference shown by the MNCs. If only our elected leaders were men of honesty rather than being the kingpins of corrupt practices these MNCs would have been ticked off way earlier. And the whole point is, we Indians have not been as alive and strong as consumers as the Americans.

But then, if we had such impeccable leaders ticking off these US giants, we would have ended up as Yet-Another-Victim of the U.S !

The thing that strikes me is this: European Union norms have been breached. Where are India's? If there aren't any, isn't that the root case of this problem?

Even if the law in India has been broken,I don't see why this 'smacks of imerialism'. The East India Company belonged to the socialist British government, Pepsi and Coke couldn't be furthur from this. I seriously doubt they have any kind of political (or even cultural-imperialism oriented) agenda. They're just there to sell.

Which, of course, in no way excuses them if they have broken the law. Just saying that resentment against these MNC's (or the "West" - it's pretty much the same thing) is illogical. Money *is* the source of all good, you know. :D

Happened to see on TV - guys bathing and feeding donkeys with these cool drinks to show their protest. Is SPCA watching these news items?
